| March 19, 2011 Springfield, Missouri. Tournament director Tim Flatt said the boys' 6A championship was one of the best games he has seen at the National Christian Homeschool Basketball Championships (NCHBC) tournament. "We have had some really crazy games," Flatt said. "I would say this was a Top 5 game in the tournament's 20-year history." Nearly 6,000 fans from around the country were on their feet at Hammons Center (Missouri State University) for the conclusion of Saturday night's matchup between the Dallas HSAA Blue Angels (34-7) and Houston HCYA Warriors (32-17). Trailing by 1 with 18 seconds to play, HSAA junior Davis Kinville put up a jumper with 4 seconds to go. The ball barely hit the front of the rim and fell into the hands of a waiting Brett DeMetrotion. Angels senior DeMetrotion was not going to lose the last game of his high school career. DeMetrotion grabbed the miss and tossed the ball behind his head for the game-winning shot as time expired. The 58-57 victory was the first Varsity national championship for the Angels' basketball program. "I was thinking....if he misses the shot, I need to be there to clean it up," said DeMetrotion, who finished the game with 11 points. "I've been doing that all year, so I was ready for it." It wasn't the first game-winning shot for DeMetrotion. The senior captain hit a 3-point buzzer-beater in the championship game of the Houston Christian Invitational Tournament earlier this year. "This one was definitely bigger," said the Angels' leading scorer. HSAA began the 4th quarter facing an 8-point deficit. Things didn't get much better until 1:30 left, while trailing by 6 points. The Angels' press forced two Warrior turnovers in the final minute. "I thought we were just about done until we got those last two turnovers," Angels coach Paul Davis said. "That gave us a chance. The last play...I did not choose to call a timeout so they couldn't set their defense...which just shows you what no coaching does. Just let them finish." The Angels led only two times during the game—after the first bucket of the game, leading 2-0, and the last 1.2 seconds, when it really counted. After the buzzer sounded, the Angels players mobbed each other at half court as the HCYA Warriors players and coaches could only stand in disbelief staring at the scoreboard.
